Watercolor and ink on paper roll, featuring rooster, signed and attr. Chen Dayu (Chinese, 1912-2001), inscribed with 1 artist seal, 68 x 44 cm. Chen Dayu was a Chinese painter, calligrapher, and seal carver, best known for his depictions of roosters. Born on May 21, 1912 in Chaoyang, China, Chen studied under Wang Geyi at the Shanghai Art College, graduating in 1935. In 1946, Chen moved to Beijing, and began working as an apprentice for the revered painter Qi Baishi. During the 1980s, the artist was included in exhibitions at both the Jiangsu Museum of Art and the Shanghai Museum of Art. Chen died on June 1, 2001 in Nanjing, China.
