Description: Grey Christ Gandhara 4th ct H: 16 cm Gandhara was an ancient state in present-day Pakistan. It is best known for its Buddhist art which was heavily influenced by early Greco-Roman art. This can be seen in the style of clothing and design of hair. Buddha Maitreya is here portraited as standing figure in jewellery. He can be made out by the sacred water flask formed in a lotus-shape carried in his left hand. He often wears a scarf draped around his waist and thrown over one of his arms. His right arm was probably raised in a mudra gesture. In Gandharan Buddhist depictions, the right shoulder is usually bare as can be seen here. Buddha Maitreya is the Buddha of the future and believed to appear on the earth when the teachings of dharma will have almost been forgotten.
