Description: Bronze, Kashmir/ Swat Valley, 8th century H: 21 cm This statue shows a number of Swat Valley style elements. Sitting Buddha in lotus pose on throne supported by two lion standing on a lotus base resting on a two-stage plinth. The throne is covered with a round cloth with tassels attached, typical for the Swat Valley style. The right hand is lying on the knee forming varada mudra, gesture of compassion, the left arm at a right angle with the hand cupped, distinctive for Swat Valley areas. The left hand is raised in mudra. He is dressed in a flowy robe covering his whole body. The eyes are open with lowered eyelids, his lips forming a gentle smile. The head shape is longer, as well as the nose is untypically long and pointy. A dot on his forehead symbolizes the third eye. The hair lies in tight curls with a prominent ushnisha. The backplate consists of two open-work fire aureoles, with the head aureole containing a star-shaped or solar halo.
