Oil on canvas, framed. Featuring a portrait of Judas Thaddaeus (1st Century BC). Unsigned with rich craquelure throughout canvas. 19th century. Possible of Judas Thaddaeus and not to be confused with Judas Iscariot. He is one of the lesser known biographical disciples, but is greatly revered by the people. He has, according to legend, preached the gospel together with Simon the Zealot in Mesopotamia, Syria and Persia. There, the two apostles, possibly relatives of Jesus, as well as James the Younger, were probably martyred by magicians by a hatchet or slapped Judas with a club and Simon sawn. 50 x 37.5 cm (19.7 x 14.8 inches). Frame size: 60.5 x 47.5 cm (23.8 x 18.7 inches). PROVENANCE: Private European collection (Bayern)
