Description: An unusual Japanese gilt lacquer and polychrome shrine, Zushi
Edo period, 19th century or earlier
The exterior with silvery-bronze nashiji ground, engraved gilt-copper mounts, opening to reveal Thousand-Armed Kannon, seated on a lotus blossom among other leaves and buds emerging from waves, below a canopy painted with ho-o birds among clouds, the doors painted with Monju and Fugen Bosatsu on their vehicals, against a gold lacquer ground.
