HAMSA, THE DIVINE GOOSE
Wood, metal, lacquer, gilding and inlay Burma, 19th to 20th cent. Burma, 19th to 20th cent. This bird, called Hntha in Myanmar, symbolizes knowledge, purity and also the “cosmic breath” and is a popular image in sacred places. In the case of this exotic piece, it forms a small container with a lid and rests on a chalice-like stand with a flat top, which is surrounded by striking decoration consisting of gilding and open-work metalwork. The wings and tail of the hamsa are also made of metal. Extensive lacquer gilding and particularly magnificent, decorative, glass inlay, partially in the form of blossoms. This piece was presumably used in a monastery for solemn “offertory” ceremonies.Dimensions: HEIGHT 33.7 CM Condition: Some signs of aging, but in good condition on the wholeProvenance: From the collection of Annemarie von Meer
