LIFE-SIZED STANDING BUDDHA
Wood, lacquer, gilding, inlays Burma/Myanmar, late 19th until around 1900 Figure of an almost life-sized Gautama Buddha crafted in the Mandalay style, attired with a richly decorated robe, with tiara and domed ushnisha, deprived of the lotus bud, what is a characteristic of Mandalay; the figure is standing on a round lotus base, hands hanging down flank in the kind of a “Rain-Buddha”, one hand is holding the border of the robe, the other holding a fruit, suggesting the depiction of a “Medicine Buddha”; presenting delicate gilt features, and arched eyebrows above the lowered eyes, the robe is smooth and partially decorated with floral motifs in thayo relief and glass inlays in the hmanzi shwecha technique, the base embellished with a relief and inlays, face gilt and traces of gilt all over.Dimensions: HEIGHT 165 CMCondition: Some signs of wear and aging, some material lossesProvenance: Galerie Zacke archive
