Porcelain with colored glazeJapan, Meiji Period, 19the cent. to around 1900A lion dog crafted with outstanding spirited expression - it its art something special. Karashishi ist der "Chinese lion", but kara can also mean Korea and as a matter of fact, there was influence from there. Shishi has flappy ears, bushy brows, open red-rimmed jaws and red tongue sticking out. The upper side of head is glazed brown, as is part of the back, showing this color lightly applied with rich flowing grain. Also yellow is featured while the main glaze color is a beige tone. Curls of the mane and tail are three-dimensional and lend shishi unusual vitality. Certainly the drawings of Hokusai - as in his manga – had their impact (by the way, this big artist is said to have drawn a shishi every morning, as protection against demons ...).Dimensions: HEIGHT 35 CMCondition: Good condition with some restorations on the side, some minor material loses Provenance: From a German collection
