Wood netsuke. Japan, 19th centuryThe kappa, literally “river child”, are mythological beings that are feared for luring children into the water to eat them. This kappa howeber is chasing a tiny frog hiding under a tent-like lotus leaf that will be hard to find even for the viewer. Flat oval base with central himotoshi, signed in oval reserve YU-ZAN 友 山.
