A TALL BURIAL VASE
A TALL BURIAL VASE
Glazed ceramic
China, Song dynasty (960-1279), 12th-13th century
The foot is conically flared outwards; above it a smooth, full-bodied, ovoid section. A step above it stands a tight row of long-robed, bearded figures, all facing completely forwards. On this vase, however, the figures are more exactingly executed than in the three burial vases presented at the beginning. Above the figures is a detailed, molded dragon. The mouth is bulbous and straight around the lip. This glaze has a rather brownish color and fine, dense craquelure.
