TWO COLORFULLY PAINTED PORCELAIN PLATES
TWO COLORFULLY PAINTED PORCELAIN PLATES
Porcelain with blue underglaze, iron red and enamel paint
China, Qing dynasty (1644-1912) 18th century
Both plates are very attractively painted in a casual and light manner, creating a striking contrast to the pure, porcelain foundation. The motifs are entirely floral, excepting the presence of a rock. Blue underglaze technique, iron red. One plate has enamel paint and features a rock, peony, chrysanthemum and bamboo. The painted blossoms inspired in their execution, the rock resembles a kobold. The borders are composed of a grid-pattern and blossoms, while three horizontal, floral compositions stretch out with an amusing freshness across the plate‘s broad rim. The lip is brown and the plate in very good condition, possibly from the early 18th century. The other place, which is more bowl shaped, has an even more freely composed design in its well. These animated and lively, painted blossoms offer a striking contrast between the orange-red iron on top of the glaze and the cool blue underglaze. Loosely painted floral border on the edge.
