A CINNABAR LACQUER ‘SCHOLAR’ VASE, QING DYNASTY
Metal body, with carved cinnabar lacquer in high relief, incised detail work and good patina
China, 19th – earlier 20th century
Carved with a circumferential scene of scholars with their attendants in a mountainous landscape with willows, pines, and massive rockwork surrounded by smaller bushes. The background with meander and diaper patterns. Neck, shoulder and base with several floral borders.
Shape: Baluster with sprawling neck
Dimensions: 39 cm (height)
Condition: Very good condition with some wear and very minor nibbling
Provenance: Austrian private collection, assembled in Asia in and before the 1930s
