A CINNABAR LACQUER ‘PHOENIX’ SNUFF BOTTLE
Carved cinnabar lacquer on metal body
China, late 19th – earlier 20th century
Both sides with a circumferential carving of a Phoenix surrounded by clouds of various shapes. Neatly incised details.
Shape: Flattened heart shape
Hollowing: Standard
Mouth, neck and lip: Long cylindric neck with flat top, partially revealing the metal body
Base: Oval with raised foot rim
Stopper: Red glass on a white platelet, good old spoon
Height of the bottle with stopper: 8.1 cm.
Width of the mouth: 7 mm.
Width of the neck: 16 mm.
Condition: Very good, with some wear
Provenance: Old Austrian private collection, acquired before 1930, thence by descent
