PENDANT WITH DRAGON AND TAOTIE
PENDANT WITH DRAGON AND TAOTIE
Opaque-whitish jade
China, late Qing dynasty, end of 19th, beginning of 20th century
Very intricately crafted amulet pendant in archaic style with dragons facing one an-other with ribbed, ram-like horns, the tails executed similarly. Between the dragons is a bird's head, below which is a demon-dispelling taotie mask. But, the lowest sec-tion of this amulet jade consists of a further, very wide-horned, very expressively crafted taotie which takes up the entire width of the piece. The space between these figures is filled with "C's", the ends of which are curled in. Both sides of this jade have been executed in the same manner.
