Jade
China, late Qing period, end of 19th, early 20th century
This archaistic jade belongs to the waning phase of the Qing dynasty and does not copy or follow any precise ‘model’ from the ancient past: actually, it is a combination of various elements assembled together to form an object which has no exact counterpart in the repertory of traditional jade shapes and which hence represents a new creation. The arched end of the jade is clearly inspired by the outline of old axes, while the notches on the sides of the middle section recall the dents of a comb. The top is then carved with an animal in profile, while the central rectangular section of this curious object is decorated with a motif directly inspired by the curls engraved on Han period scabbard slides.
