FINE BENCH WITH TWO CHAIRS
FINE BENCH WITH TWO CHAIRS
Noble wood and mother-of-pearl
China, approx. late Qing to Republic
Rare, elaborately carved and decorated bench with curved legs, armrests and backrest. The level seating surface is decorated with mother-of-pearl inlays starting at the edges, with patterns forming floral compositions, similar to the openwork feature on the curved front contour. The backrest is particularly striking in terms of form and complexity, presenting a strongly curved, in part openwork crest rail with floral ornaments. The surface of the backrest is richly inlaid with mother-of-pearl decorations – a dense composition of chrysanthemum flowers, peonies, roses, as well as butterflies and two long-tailed birds. Similar decoration on the backside, with a depiction again offering flowers and butterflies, but also bodies of water, swimming ducks as well as birds with long beaks in the water. Both chairs have armrests and a backrest with matching style and patterns, the backrest again decorated with similar mother-of-pearl inlays, also on the backside, likewise offering flowers and water birds.
