A NORTH INDIAN SANDSTONE FIGURE OF A DEVI, 14th/15th CENTURY
Sandstone
North India, 14th/15th century
The heavy sandstone with a depiction of a full-breasted Devi, an Indian goddess and manifestation of ultimate truth and supreme power. The stone is weathered, as are the facial features, however the composition has not lost any of its power or serenity. A hand is visible to the left of the Devi, a remnant of the larger frieze.
Dimensions: HEIGHT 31 CM
Condition: Fair condition – the frieze is obviously incomplete, and the stone has been glued in two separate areas – requires professional restoration
Provenance: German private collection
