A BASTAR BRONZE OF GODDESSES ON A SWING
A BASTAR BRONZE OF GODDESSES ON A SWING
Bronze
India, 19th-20th century
Swings are among the strangest but at the same time the most desired from the tribal art of the Bastar. They are usually made of several parts: in this case, the presentation consists of two parts: the goddesses on the swing and the base with the frame where the swing is attached. The goddess that is sitting on the left side of the swing is holding with its left arm the swing and with the spare arm a vessel. The other goddess is holding with the left arm a sceptre and a sword in the right hand. On top of each pillar holding the swing can be seen birds which act as guardians to protect the goddesses.
