SAWANKHALOK BOWL
SAWANKHALOK BOWL
Glazed ceramic
Siam, 15th - 16th cent.
Rare example of such impressive quality. The heavy body has curved walls, is ribbed all the way around on the outside and has a lotus-leaf border on the inside with a lotus blossom in the well of the bowl. The clear, green glaze in the style of Chinese qingbai is particularly beautiful around the foot, where it features drip formations as well as a powerful, closely finely knit craquelure. In the well is a pool from out of which the lotus blossom shines forth. Signs of aging; on the whole, complete and well-preserved. Sawankhalok was a historically importance center of ceramic production in the Kingdom of Sukhothai, later Ayutthya.
