Stone
Mezcala culture, Mexico, c. 500 BC
Smoothly carved out of beautiful light green stone. The figure is carved with a bold simplicity which distinctly defines the face, nose, mouth and hands, with drilled eyes.
Remarkably, these sculptures were created without the use of metal tools. The craftsmen simply used stone on stone, the sculptors carved the hard stone with absolute sureness and special sculptural sensitivity.
