VESSEL IN THE SHAPE OF TWO SNAKES
VESSEL IN THE SHAPE OF TWO SNAKES
Terracotta
Colima, West-Mexico, ca. 100 - 300
Characterful vessel with a large, funnel-shaped mouth with a completely flat bottom. The snake’s bodies are curved, and lie on opposite sides of the vessel, forming a shape similar to the Chinese yin and yang symbol. Their flat heads have deeply engraved details and their scales are suggested by scattered notches. On the funnel-shaped mouth is a geometric line pattern painted in red, unfortunately only partially preserved. Traces of a snake body are also visible. The Colima culture existed between ca. 200 BCE and 400 CE. Aside from their wide variety of vessel forms, the animal pottery they produced are well known, in particular, the chubby dogs.
