British,?19th century, six various ale measures, copper with tin linings, all with handles, rounded to squared handles, all marked with liquid capacity with range 1/2 gallon to 4 gallons, some dovetail construction, rivets, range 9-1/2 in. to 18 in. height??Provenance: Collection of Marion and Theodore Gore, Williamsburg, Virginia. According to the family, the Gores purchased most of their pewter, brass and copper from Jack Casimir Ltd. in London.Note: To prevent the pub owner from cheating on their taxes, local officials would frequent establishments and verify that the size of jug was indeed correct, and if so, would paint a lead seal somewhere on the inside rim with date, inspector identification number, and a crown with initials of the current king or queen. On four of these jugs is evidence of these marks.
