The Goddess of Mercy is elegantly modelled seated on a rocky plinth which is flanked on either side by two raised outcrops supporting a bird and a vase. Her two acolytes, Longnu and Shancai, stand before her with a vessel between them. The group is covered in a rich ivory glaze.
Catalogue notes:
Guanyin is often depicted with her two acolytes, Longnu and Shancai. Shancai, also known as Sudhana, was an Indian youth seeking enlightenment, and Longnu (Dragon Girl), the granddaughter of the Dragon King.
Compare a Guanyin group with a similar composition, however with a dragon instead of a vessel between the two acolytes from the Galster-Ireland Collection sold at Christie's Online, 9-23 July 2013, lot 15, and an 18th-century example with no vessel between the attendants sold at Sotheby's New York, 19 March 2016, lot 1467.
Condition: The girl attendant, the bird, and the vase have been off and restuck.
There are various chips.
The base has been lightly buffed.
There is expected light surface wear.
