The motif is based on a recorded historic, and possibly extinct, breed dating from before the 2nd century B.C.E., the tall and powerful Ferghana horses (or "Heavenly Horses"), which are depicted in Tang dynasty earthenware figures displayed at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. This breed was the subject of the War of the Heavenly Horses, a military conflict fought between the Han Empire and the Kingdom of Dayuan in about 104-101 BC.
