ELEGANT, EXTRAORDINARY 19th C. Chinese Qing Dynasty Tongzhi reign period (11 November 1861-12 January 1875) sgraffito dragon Famille Verte Imperial porcelain bowl. A deep curvature flaring upward to form the rim, with a slightly raised footing. The exterior masterfully covered in an even coat of a delicate emerald-green glaze which terminates at the base to reveal the clean white underglaze base. Large sinuous five-slaws dragon carved around the bowl amongst smoldering mist, and cumulus Lishui wavy water ground. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity. The immaculate porcelain body is covered with a characteristic silky glaze, with various striations throughout the finish. The color is balanced, elegant and exquisite. The porcelain displays a subtle sheen across the finely glazed exterior. The carving is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish applied to confirm the dragon motif. The porcelain conformed all required specimen to be highly valued Chinese Guanyao porcelain Imperial wares, with the finest material, the color produced, the glaze, the carving, and the shape.
The under-base bears a reign mark, a vertical six underglazed blue script characters reign mark; Made in The Years of Tongzhi Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty (11 November 1861-12 January 1875). A retired engineer and Christian School Administrator, has had the heart of a missionary to serve in many foreign countries aiding in building orphanages and hospitals in Russia, Romania, Ukraine, and other Asian countries. His present work is in Lima Peru. There he is using his talents to help develop safe drinking water and establish sanitary conditions inside the hospital. He is the parent to 16 children most of which are adopted from various countries. His worldwide travels have allowed him to enjoy the ability to collect treasures, some of his collection will be sold at auction to help raise funds for his ongoing work in Peru.
