Chinese grayish-celadon nephrite jade in model of a mythical beast Qilin, generally have Chinese dragon-like features. Eyes with thick eyelashes, manes that flow slightly upward and beards beneath pair of antlers. The body is scaled and shaped like an ox. The head facing rear hip, resting in relax position on its four legs, its tail freely laid next to left hip. The mouth gasp a stylized Lingzhi ruyi branch carved on the hump. Displayed exquisitely upon a carved hardwood stand. Qilin are thought to be a symbol of luck, good omens, protection, prosperity, success, and longevity by the Chinese. Qilin are also a symbol of fertility, and often depicted in decorations as bringing a baby to a family. The Nephrite jade shows pale-grayish-celadon with hints of russet inclusions and moist milky appearance.

Jim Francis was a true scholar having a degree in English. His early career started as a professor at a community college in Kentucky. During the Vietnam era, he became an instructor for the US Air Force. When computers were first becoming popular Jim became a software engineer which lead him to a career in being a method analyst for a major hospital group. While working with Doctors from different cultures Jim became an avid collector of Chinese items, His widow has placed his treasured articles to be sold at auction.
