Set of Chinese Northern Wei Dynasty (ca. 386-534 CE) Gilt Bronze Maitreya Buddha, the bodhisattva of loving kindness and the coming buddha of the future aeon - currently residing in the Tushita heaven.
Maitreya is seated above a multi-leveled throne, before a Torana, with the right hand held upward the mudra (gesture) of blessing and explication of the Dharma and with the left in the mudra of generosity extended across the left knee. Seated in a western style on a square throne, with the two feet are each supported by a lotus flower. Radiant light emanates to form demountable nimbus and aureole, siting in the performance of giving teachings to small groups of faithful listeners. With attendant bodhisattvas and groups of gathering heavenly gods standing at each side. Crusted green hue molted patina covers the vessels body.
