A LACQUERED WOOD NETSUKE OF A PAIR OF CHESTNUTSUnsigned, lacquered wood netsukeJapan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)Two large chestnuts (kuri) lying beside each other, covered in a shimmering dark-red lacquer with streaks of black lacquer shining through. The underside simulating the characteristic stippled surface of the kuri, is covered in silver lacquer with rich gold sprinkled on it. Chestnuts are a symbol of success and are popular New Years gifts. Buddhists also believe that the souls of the deceased rest in chestnuts.
