Mid 19th century Chinese silk wall hanging, circa 1855, couch embroidered with metallic threads on a red ground, the large central area with a birthday poem for a Cantonese high official, at the court of Emperor Xiang Feng, 9th emperor of the Qing Dynasty, surrounded by a highly embellished border filled with auspicious symbols, the interior border comprised of the deities Luxing (wealth), Shoulao (longevity), and Fuxing (prosperity), along with the eight immortals, and a pagoda surrounded by animal imagery, including cranes (longevity) and deer (auspice), the exterior border with a central imperial dragon flanked by phoenixes, and three foo lions at play (a symbol for wishing a successful career), all interspersed with floriated designs.
