His raised hand gives the gesture of fearlessness, Abhaya, with the lower hand held in Varadamudra, the gesture of wish granting. Siding the Buddha, we find two bodhisattvas, possibly Padmapani, standing on a lotus pedestal, each holding what appears to be a lotus blossom. Sitting on a lotus throne above the Buddha is a third small figure which, since it is in worship and has no cranial protrusion, might be an abbot. The expressively carved small tongues to the crown of flames symbolize the light rays of Buddha’s appearance and teachings.
