A Damascus glazed fritware tile, Ottoman Syria, circa 1570-1580, of rectangular form, painted with rose, carnation and lily design, flanked by vase and acanthus border, 27cm x 19.5cm mounted for wall hanging Compare with a similar example in Leighton House, illustrated, Arthur Millner, Damascus Tiles, London, 2015, fig 1.18, page 36. Old Damascus tiles were often used around fireplaces in late 19th century Western interiors which might explain the soot on this example. See Arthur Millner, Damascus Tiles, London, 2015, fig 5.20, page 232. Provenance: From the Estate of the late Sir Howard Hodgkin CH CBE.
