AN INDICOLITE AND DIAMOND CLUSTER RINGThe cushion-shaped indicolite tourmaline weighing approximately 5.00cts, within a surround of round brilliant-cut diamonds, to a trifurcated plain hoop, mounted in 14K gold, diamonds approximately 3.00cts total, ring size LThe tourmaline is a gemstone favoured by many for its wide range of colours. Of the spectrum, blue is the rarest, with paraiba tourmalines being well known for their high value and collectability. While the paraiba tourmaline gets its colour from the presence of copper, the indicolite tourmaline, is another rare variety of blue tourmaline which is coloured by iron. It is strongly pleochroic (i.e. will show different intensities of colour when viewing from different angles) and generally varies from a light to a deep blue. The name indicolite is derived from indigolite, a nod to the intense indigo colour of the stone although these tourmalines can also sometimes be of a greenish hue.
