A VIENNA PORCELAIN LIDDED DISH (SAHAN) FOR THE OTTOMAN MARKET Vienna, Austria, late 18th century? Of circular form, painted with scattered sprigs and sprays of colourful flowers, the interior similarly decorated, the yellow scale ground rims edged with gilt scrollwork, the finial modelled as a large lemon on a leafy stalk, shield mark in underglaze-painted blue to the base, two incised numbers '33' and '22' to the base, two red-painted numbers to the foot '25' and '44', 21cm diam.? By the 18th century, the Ottoman market had become a significant customer of European porcelain factories. In particular, the celebrated porcelain factory of Vienna was favoured by the Ottomans for its lively colours and supplied the Ottoman elite with high-quality, high-fired wares, later imitated with cheaper materials by the Suleymaniye workshop. The floral decoration, truly European, was to have a strong impact on Ottoman courtly taste and later decorative patterns.?To celebrate the cultural exchanges and commercial relations between the East and the West, the?Sak?p Sabanc? Museum in Istanbul put together an entire exhibition on European porcelains at the Ottoman court (Osmanli Sarayinda Avrupa Porselenleri, 24 May - 28 August 2005) and several examples exhibited here show stylistic and decorative similarities to our sahan. For an in-depth discussion, please see the exhibition catalogue, pp. 54 - 55.?A very similar?sahan?and an entire set of Vienna porcelain made for the Ottoman market were offered at Sotheby's London, 7 October 2009, lots 203 and 207.Notes: Islamic & Indian Art
