TWO PIERCED BRASS DECORATIVE DOOR PANELS Iran, mid-20th century? The concave ovals with lobed borders, pierced with scrolling arabesques, one with a central roundel of a youth offering a wine cup to a sage in a landscape, the other with an image of a poet, turbaned and bearded, holding a rosary and with an open book on his lap, leaning against a cushion in the garden of Hafez's tomb in Shiraz, 57cm x 42cm. Andre Godard (1881-1965), the French architect, archaeologist, historian, and director of the Iranian archaeological service 1928-1953 and 1956-1960, designed the tomb of the poet Hafez in the Mussalah Gardens of Shiraz in 1935. The present panels should be dated on that basis, as well as on revivalist tendencies of the mid-20th century.Notes: Islamic & Indian Art
