Previously in the collection of a Hong Kong gentleman, who worked for the real estate company from 1940-1960. According to the grandchild of the gentleman, the current lot was a gift from his business partner.
This depiction of Daoist deities was once part of a set of paintings used in the Buddhist water-and-land ritual, the main goal of this ritual is to invite beings of higher realms to help the beings in the lower realms get out of their sufferings.
In this particular rich detailed painting, the protector of women and children in Chinese folk belief, Three Nai Goddess( san nai fu ren, nai was a respectful way to address older women) are at the center, giving out blessings to little children and warding off evil spirit from women.
