Previously in the collection of a Hong Kong gentleman, who worked for the real estate company from 1940-1960. According to the grandchild of the gentleman, the current lot was a gift from his business partner.
The painting depicts twenty-four Bodhisattvas descending from heavens accompanied by three attendants; each bodhisattva represents one devaloka, a plane of existence where gods and devas exist, were usually described as places of eternal light and goodness, similar to the concept of heaven.
This painting, which comes from a set of Chinese Buddhism images used in water-and-land rituals, is distinguished by its high level of craftsmanship and lavish use of colorful pigments.
