He is also a successful businessman and a connoisseur of Chinese ink painting and calligraphy. During his time returning to China, he met and befriended several Chinese ink painting masters including Qi Gong, Zhao Puchu, Huang Zhou, Wu Zuoren, Liu Haisu and Huang Yongyu, hence Zhou’s collections are mainly gifts given by the ink painting artists. Zhu Qizhan’s Landscape under Misty Rain is Mr. Zhou Yunjian’s old collection. Zhu Qizhan, a Shanghai-style ink painting artist in the 20th century, had been infusing western painting style into Chinese traditional artistic conception in his long and splendid art career. His style is simple and straightforward but magnificent. He created deep conceptual prospects with simple brush strokes and made himself a unique style of painting among all Chinese ink painting artists. Zhu painted this work with generous and rich ink strokes. Lively, vaporizing clouds are created with the coloring, and show an awe-inspiring righteousness between heaven and earth. Zhu likes to use Prussian blue and ochre to paint mountains and water to represent the essence of humanity in a whole with bold, simple brush strokes. In the history of Chinese poetry painting evolution, the combination of poets and paintings enhances the presentation and contagion of the artwork itself, and further emphasizes the characteristic of unsophisticated and peaceful lifestyle. Zhu Qizhan is absolutely outstanding when it comes to poetry. His hearttouching poems heighten the simplicity in Chinese culture with rich and gorgeous visual impact and further depict the emotion inspired from the glorious mountains and water. Since the age of 8, Zhu Qizhan started his practice in art and followed his passion for art for close to a century. He once mentioned, “there are three words that I live up to, individuality, persistence and austerity.” Individuality states the genuity towards one’s own thoughts. Persistence refers to the stamina in one’s practice and philosophy. Austerity suggests one’s ascetic life towards humility. Zhu’s humility, open-mindedness and diligence had been widely recognized. He never regarded his paintings as better than others’and was never satisfied with his own paintings. He always said with humility, “I couldn’t do it, I did that badly.” He was never arrogant with regards to his achievements, seniority and honour. Zhu went through a century of turbulence in society and supported the belief of Socialism and the Communist Party of China. He always mentioned, “Painting was used to be done for a living, now we do it for the benefit of our country. The quality of life today is much better than that of the past.” The 100-year-old ink master once said, “Leading an innocent and austere life, that is the most sacred choice I have ever made in my life.” His power of art and philosophy live on and will pass down in generations.
