The frame likely original as there is evidence that the painting was framed while still wet. Evidence can be seen in the lower right hand corner of the painting and on the lower portion of the frame where there is original paint residue. Dimensions are: canvas is 9 5/8 inches tall X 12 5/8 wide, framed - 14 5/8 inches tall X 17 5/8 inches wide. All measurements are approximate. Artist Biography: Dutch-Indonesian artist Arie Smit (b.1916). Known for his paintings of Bali. He studied at the Academy of Arts in Rotterdam, Netherlands and afterwards joined the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army. He was captured by the Japanese military during World War II and spent several years in forced labor. Upon his release from indentured servitude in 1945, he entered the Republic of Indonesia and gained Indonesian citizenship. He lived in Bali until his death in 2016.
