Description: Kim Sang-Yu, aka Kim Sangyu (Korean, 1926 - 2002), etching on paper of auspicious symbols and Korean traditional imagery, circa 1960s. Marked A/P for artist proof and signed by the artist in the lower right hand corner. Dimensions are: plate size - 12 1/16 inches wide X 20 inches high, overall - 18 1/4 inches X 28 inches high. All measurements are approximate. Artist Biography: Kim Sang-Yu (1926 – 2002, Korean): Is known as a printmaker and painter. His formal studies were in philosophy at Yonsei University and he learned the art of copperplate printing in the early 1960s. Sangyu’s first solo exhibition of copperplate prints was held in 1963 and in 1970 he received the grand prize at the first Seoul International Print Biennial. Since the mid-1970s, he has worked with block prints and in the mid-1980s began painting in oils. Sang-yu received the second Lee Joong Sup Award in 1990 and has participated in the Korean Printmaker's Association Exhibition and Korean Print- 2 Artist Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan.
