Made in an exclusive limited edition of only 18 pieces in platinum and 18 pieces in pink gold. The pink gold version was apparently available only upon request, the present watch is number 5 of the pink gold edition. Launched in 2013 and following in the tradition of its illustrious Ulysse Nardin forebear the San Marco, the Minute Repeater Carnival of Venice is inspired by “La Serenissima”. The stunning cloisonné dial also features two tiny automatons, called “Jaquemarts,” which move in time to the striking when the minute repeater is activated. The two masked figures standing before the Rialto Bridge, masks being traditional for the Carnival of Venice, come to life and lift their masks as the repeater strikes the hours, quarters, and minutes. The movement behind this visual and audible masterpiece is Ulysse Nardin’s manual wind caliber UN-71, with a 48-hour power reserve. Cloisonné dials are among the most lavish and desirable for wristwatches due to their strong unfading colours and artistic beauty. The production of solid gold cloisonne-decorated enamel dials was extremely costly as they had to be individually made by a skilled craftsman and not on a production line. The artist created the outline of the desired motif by arranging thin gold wires on a dial. These partitions, called "cloisons" in French, were filled with small quantities of enamel powder in the desired colour. The dial was then fired in a furnace at around 1000 degrees Celsius causing the powder to melt into glass. Finally it was hand-polished until obtaining a perfectly flat surface. Such dials are regarded as works of art in their own right.Continuing the longstanding tradition of fine automaton timepieces, this superb and complicated piece of high watchmaking art is sure to enchant and delight the beholder.
