An 18th century or earlier gilt bronze figure of Je Tsongkhapa (1357-1419) Tibetan
The Buddhist guru modelled clad in robes, seated in padmasana on a lotus throne, the hands in dharmachakra mudra, the serene face topped with a pandita hat. 7 cm high.
Note: Tsongkhapa was a Tibetan philosopher who published many influential text and founded a powerful monastery in Lhasa. In 1407 and 1413 he was invited to the Imperial Court in Beijing by Emperor Yongle who extensively patronized Buddhism in China. As an iconic figure he was the centre of the Gelugpa Sect which ruled Tibet until 1951. CONDITION REPORTS: Generally good, with expected wear, some minor dints and bruises, the shoulders previously flanked with precious objects atop lotus flowers.
