Description: A PAINTED AND GILT WOOD AND IVORY SCULPTURE OF THE HOLY FAMILY
Indo-portuguese, 18th century
24,5 cm high
The sculpture shows to the centre the Virgin Mary with the Child seated on her right leg, Saint Joseph at her left, moulded base and the back of the chair with an undulated profile, hands and faces of the personages in painted ivory.
Provenance: Italian private collection.
This interesting sculpture is an example of the so-called 'indo-portuguese' artistic production: it was made in India, probably in Goa, but the theme is clearly European and the style echoing a 18th century Portuguese taste.
