Diamètre: 25 cm. (9 7/8 in.)
Previously in the collection of Jean Mahé (according to invoice). French private collection, aquired in the French art market, 13 January 1994.
Deep boxes of this type would most likely have been used to contain food. A similar octagonal box from the Tokyo University of Arts, was included in the exhibition, Carved Lacquer, Tokugawa Art Museum and Nezu Institute of Fine Arts, 1984, illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 17. See a very similar tixi lacquer globular box and cover from the Hosakawa Family Collection, sold in Christie's Hong Kong, 29 November 2005, lot 1534. Another tixi lacquer octagonal food box, dated late 14th-early 15th century can been seen in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York, gifted by Florence and Herbert Irving in 2015 (accession number: 2015.500.1.3a, b).
