A LARGE SANBIKI NO SARU BRONZE
Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912). This extremely rare and massively cast bronze bears a dark natural patina and the artist seal mark Yoko. The wise monkeys are a famous pictorial maxim, embodying the proverbial principle ‘see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil’. The three are Mizaru, covering his eyes, Kikazaru, covering his ears, and Iwazaru, covering his mouth.
