Description:
A FINE BRONZE SHISHI CENSER
Japan, Edo period, 18th century. A small piece of fur on the back of the lion can be removed to reveal the inner of the bronze vessel, where the incense is deposited and burned for the smoke to dramatically leave through the open mouth of the beast. The statue is massively cast and incised with fine detail to the curly fur and bushy tail.
