Note: This piece was highly prized by both Mr. Bourgeois, as it was purchased during the dying years of the Qing Dynasty from a local official. Mr. Lafond reportedly paid a good amount for this piece, because Mr. Bourgeois originally wanted to bring it back to France. This piece can be easily mistaken for a Qing Dynasty ceramic, but the blue used here is the same type of cobalt pigment used for blue and white pieces in Yuan and early Ming Dynasties. There are not many Yuan or early Ming dynasty pieces surviving today that are highly prized and preserved so well.
