Period reign of Emir Tatar 1421-1422
Brass chiselled with traces of silver, decorated with a long votive titulature in "thuluth" for an emir with laqab of Malek al-Zaher. Formerly redone top. Egypt or Syria, 1st quarter 15th century.
Several sultans from the 15th century have the laqab "Al-Zaher". The laqab became the symbol of party allegiance. The precedent of using the laqab of the faction's founder was set with the rise of Tatar to power in 824/1421. He took the laqab "al-Zahir Barquq"
Tatar died three months into his reign by Barsbay, another Circassian emir of Barquq, in 1422.
