Description: bronze, India, 16th century, Size: 15 cm An often seen combination of Vishnu with his wife Lakshmi sitting on his left leg, both being carried by Garuda, here depicted in human form. Two small devotees flank the main deities who are framed by a gate with decorative pillars and torches. Vishnu is forming the varada mudra with his left hand, offering compassion and welcoming. The other arm is holding Lakshmi, goddess of wealth and fortune, while also holding an object in his hand, possibly his damaru drum or parashu, the battle axe. The depiction of Vishnu and Lakshmi together is also referred to as Lakshmi Narayan.
