A George III paste cameo of Mary Shirley (née Meredith), Countess Ferrers, later Lady Campbell (1737/8-1807), circa 1807, the carved profile of Lady Campbell within a gold setting, inscribed to the reverse Mary Meredith The Wife Of Ld F Campbell Died 25th July 1807 Aged 70, 3cm long, 8.2g gross Mary Meredith, the younger sister of Sir William Meredith, 3rd Baronet, Lord of the Admiralty, married her first husband Laurence Shirley (1720-60), 4th Earl Ferrers, in 1752. Mary was forced to divorce Earl Ferrers on the grounds of cruelty in 1758. Earl Ferrers was renowned for his aggressive and brutal temper, and had the infamous distinction to be the last peer to be hanged in Britain as a common felon in 1760 for the murder of his steward, who had been tasked with the collecting of rents for Countess Ferrers following their divorce. In 1769 Mary married Lord Frederick Campbell, (1729 - 1816), the fourth son of John Campbell, the fourth Duke of Argyll (c.1693 - 1770). Lady Mary was killed in a house fire at the Family home, Combe Bank near Sevenoaks. 'A fire broke out at Coombank, Lord Frederick Campbell's seat, in Kent. Lady F. Campbell, it appears, was addicted to the dangerous practice of reading in bed; and whilst thus engaged, fell asleep. The curtains of her bed caught fire; and the flames acquired such force, that every effort to rescue her ladyship proved ineffectual. When the body was found it was nearly reduced to ashes'. (The Annual Register, Or, A View of the History, Politics, and Literature for the Year 1807, published in 1809, printed by Harding & Wright).
