A pair of Edwardian green stained ivory cufflinks by Child & Child, circa 1905, the heart shaped panels set with green stained ivory, the gold panels stamped with the Child & Child makers mark, with belcher link connectors, panels 1.6cm long, 9g gross After a design by Sir Edward Burne-Jones, the eminent Pre-Raphaelite painter and jewellery designer. The heart was a favourite motif of Burne-Jones, and the cufflinks were originally produced for the artist's own use, and reproduced commercially during the 1880s. Burne-Jones had a preference for stained ivory over other stones, speaking in a letter to a friend of gifts he had given to his daughter he noted 'of all the things I gave her to wear on her little fingers none looked so sweet as a poor cheap bit of ivory, stained so that it looked like a cherry, and it makes you laugh with delight at its funny red splash of colour, and it beats all except the sapphire that is crown of stones.' Charlotte Gere & Judy Rudoe, Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria, 2010, p157; and see Charlotte Gere & Geoffrey Munn, Pre-Raphaelite to Arts and Crafts Jewellery, p.151 for a similar pair of cufflinks From the collection of Eustace Gibbs, 3rd Baron Wraxall, KCVO, CMG
